Kerala

Coconuts and kalari, synagogues and backwaters, seafood and kathakali. There’s much more to Kerala than the swaying palm trees make it out to be. Un[travel] into a trader’s wonderland, laden with spices and beautiful people, haven to Jews and Christians alike. Nothing in ‘God’s own country’ is ever understated. From its people and politics to the fiery cuisine, everything in Kerala is in abundance. Tranquil backwaters make this ‘the’ tourist destination of the country with houseboats marking picture-postcard views across the waterway. Erstwhile nude beaches of Kovalam now make way for Kerala’s own slice of Goa on its shoreline in Varkala and the serene Mararikulam. Plan ahead to make your visit coincide with the super-enthusiastic annual snake boat races in Alleppey in August. Head over to the Western Ghats with its ecologically diverse treasures and spectacular tea gardens.

Best time to Visit

For clearer skies, opt for a slot between the early September to the end of March. The beaches look their best early November through to March. Backwater rides are pleasant because of the dip in humidity. Though mid-October and November does see a fair amount of rain with the North-West monsoons.

Sultry summers set in by April to the end of May with fairly high outdoor temperatures. The hilly areas of Munnar and Wayanad have the perfect temperatures.

Monsoons arrive by the first week of June right through to the end of August. Cool temperatures with overcast skies and green all around make this a visit like none other.
